TEAM AND CULTURE           CRITERION FELLOWSHIP            COMPENSATION STRUCTURE            HOW TO APPLY

Team and Culture

Employees and contractors are systems change agents from all over the world who work fully remotely at times that suit them, often alongside other compatible engagements. They come from diverse backgrounds: civil society organisations, women’s rights organisations, government and donor agencies and from finance, commercial and legal sectors.

While we are a very diverse group of people, we share these attributes that bode well for success: communication skills, flexibility, a passion for abstract and meta-analytical thinking and an ability to trust the process of change which is frequently opaque and slow moving but does get us there in the end.

Ideal candidates usually have either gender or systems change expertise and understand (or want to understand) finance, or have finance and investment experience and want to get more involved in systems change. Almost all of our team members are contractors and work between 1-5 days per week. We have very few employees.

Criterion Fellowship

We have a volunteer (unpaid) 6-12 month Fellowship with a minimum commitment of approximately 4 hours/week.

Completion of this Fellowship puts you in a trusted contractor pool so that we can move forward quickly when work gets funded. We do hire contractors who have not completed the Fellowship and they do the same curriculum during their first six months as an Orientation. So the Fellowship isn’t a pre-requisite, it just increases your chance of getting paid work later or becoming part of our core team.

We will have openings for our Fellowship again in September – find out how to apply

Compensation Structure

In January 2023, Criterion introduced an innovative compensation structure designed to improve pay transparency and more adequately value the fullness of employee and contractor experience. You can read more about how it works here, and download the calculator below to get a sense of what your rate would be.

The best way to get to know us and what we do is to come to one of our events and get to know our President, Joy Anderson, and other team members. We regularly hold free trainings and also host Convergence, an annual month-long gathering of field builders and systems changers.

If you’d like to explore opportunities further, please send Janet Schieferdecker, People Ops Manager a resume and a cover letter explaining which aspects of our work you are most interested in advancing and what you have already been doing in this area.
